Age Requirements
ASA has no absolute requirement for a minimum age for students. However, this does not mean that any age is OK. In over three decades of teaching people how to sail, ASA has evolved the courses to be most efficiently taught to students around 18 or over. Most students this age have some experience with driving and real-time decision-making, as well as a base of general knowledge and adult responsibility.
Thus, we have found that when teaching these courses there may be some issues with students under 18, such as:
Referential Context
Adult Group Experience
Vocabulary
Learning Process
Decision-making
Attention Span
Any one of these factors can lead to extra time for explanations, extra skills practice, or other delays. This could impact teaching other students in the class, or even require extra time for the entire class.
Having a parent in the class can also create a different dynamic for the instructor. Parents tend to either feel the need to exhibit knowledge for the son or daughter, or they think they are helping the instructor explain things to their child.
