Commonly Asked Sailing Questions

  • The best way to learn sailing in Seattle is through structured, hands-on instruction from a certified school like Puget Sound Sailing Institute. Our ASA 101 Basic Keelboat class at Bell Harbor Marina is a perfect introduction — offering real world sailing experience in Elliott Bay with professional instructors. Students leave confident and certified.

  • Most beginners can learn the basics of sailing in just 2–3 days with our ASA 101 weekend course. To become fully charter ready (able to rent and sail boats on your own), many students complete ASA 103 and ASA 104 within a few weeks.

We offer bundled course options and flexible scheduling from multiple marinas across the Puget Sound region.

  • Absolutely. No experience is required to begin with ASA 101. Our instructors are trained to teach complete beginners, and our protected Puget Sound waters provide the perfect learning environment. You'll learn terminology, safety, docking, points of sail, and boat handling with no prior knowledge needed.

  • Washington State does not require a license to sail a recreational vessel. However, most charter companies (including PSSI) require proof of competence such as ASA certifications. Completing ASA 104 usually qualifies you to charter bareboats in the U.S. and abroad.

If you don’t yet qualify, we also offer captained charters so you can still enjoy the water.

  • Sailing is easier than many expect, especially with proper instruction. Our students often feel comfortable at the helm within a few hours. The key is learning hands-on in real conditions, not just from books. With PSSI, you’ll sail in real wind, on real boats, with real coaching and not simulations.
