Beginner to Intermediate Sailing Lessons

ASA 102: Keelboat 2 builds directly on the skills learned in ASA 101 and is designed for sailors ready to move beyond the basics and sail with greater confidence and control. In this course, you will learn to confidently skipper a 20'–27' tiller-steered keelboat in light to moderate conditions, with winds up to 20 knots.

This course focuses on refining boat handling, improving sail trim, and strengthening your ability to make safe, effective decisions on the water. You will practice smoother maneuvers, better crew coordination, and more precise sail control, all while developing the confidence needed to sail independently in familiar coastal waters.

Before your class, you’ll gain a head start with our online sailing prep course (included with tuition). This prepares you to make the most of your on-the-water time by reinforcing sailing theory, safety practices, and advanced handling concepts.

Why Take This Sailing Class?

ASA 102 is where sailors begin to transition from learning how a boat works to confidently commanding one. This course is about refinement, awareness, and independence.

At Puget Sound Sailing Institute, ASA 102 goes beyond checking certification boxes. We train you to anticipate wind changes, manage sail power smoothly, and coordinate effectively with your crew. You’ll learn to make thoughtful decisions on the water and develop the confidence to skipper in real-world conditions across Puget Sound, Elliott Bay, and the Tacoma Narrows.

By the end of ASA 102, you won’t just be following procedures, you’ll be sailing with intention and control. This level of confidence is essential for sailors planning to join a sailing club, pursue boat leasing, or advance into ASA 103 (Coastal Cruising) and ASA 104 (Bareboat Cruising).

ASA 102 is a critical step in the progression from beginner sailor to capable skipper.
