What’s the Difference Between ASA 101, 103, and 104? A Beginner’s Guide to Sailing Certification

If you’ve ever dreamed of learning to sail in the beautiful waters of the Pacific Northwest, you’ve probably come across a few acronyms such as ASA 101, ASA 103, ASA 104 and wondered what they mean. These numbers represent the American Sailing Association’s core certification levels, designed to take you from absolute beginner to confident coastal cruiser.

At Puget Sound Sailing Institute (PSSI), we offer all three levels at our marinas in Seattle, Tacoma, Des Moines, and Anacortes, helping students gain real world experience on Puget Sound’s diverse sailing conditions.

Let’s break down what each course includes and which one is right for you.

What Are ASA Certifications?

The American Sailing Association (ASA) offers a progressive training path that builds your sailing knowledge and experience in clearly defined stages. Each ASA course is nationally recognized and comes with a corresponding certification that proves you’ve mastered specific sailing skills.

ASA 101: Basic Keelboat Sailing

Skill level: Beginner

Boat size: 20'–27' keelboat, tiller-steered

Environment: Protected waters, light to moderate winds

Duration: 2 days (9am–6pm)

Tuition: $700

If you’re brand new to sailing, ASA 101 is your starting point. This two-day, hands-on course teaches you how to safely operate a small keelboat during day sailing in familiar waters. You’ll learn sailing terminology, how sails work, how to steer and trim sails, and how to dock safely.

“This course is ideal if you’ve never sailed before or want to feel confident as crew on someone else’s boat.”

Skills You’ll Learn

  • Points of sail, wind awareness, and steering

  • Tacking, jibing, and sail trim techniques

  • Docking, departure, and safety drills

  • Man overboard recovery basics

What’s Included:

  • ASA “Sailing Made Easy” textbook

  • Online prep course (Intro to Sailing)

  • ASA 101 certification + official logbook

  • 90-day ASA membership

  • All safety gear provided

At PSSI, ASA 101 includes an online prep course, ASA logbook, and 90‑day ASA membership, giving you a solid foundation before you even step on board.

Next step: Once you complete ASA 101, you’ll be ready for ASA 103: Coastal Cruising.

ASA 103: Coastal Cruising

  • Boat size: 25'–35' keelboat, inboard or outboard

  • Environment: Inland/coastal cruising, daytime only

  • Duration: 2 days (9am–6pm)

  • Tuition: $750

ASA 103 builds on the basics of ASA 101 and prepares you for daytime coastal cruising. You’ll gain confidence in unfamiliar waters, learn how to read charts, and operate more complex boat systems—including inboard engines, electronics, and navigation tools.

“Think of ASA 103 as your transition from sailing in a bay or lake to venturing along the coast.”

Skills You’ll Learn

  • Coastal navigation (charts, bearings, plotting)

  • Docking and anchoring in real-world conditions

  • Operating engines and troubleshooting

  • Weather forecasting and seamanship

  • Rules of the road (COLREGs)

What’s Included:

  • ASA “Coastal Cruising Made Easy” textbook

  • Online prep course

  • ASA 103 certification

  • All required safety equipment

Prerequisites: ASA 101 + at least 24 hours of sailing experience

ASA 104: Bareboat Cruising

Skipper a Multi-Day Charter Like a Pro

  • Skill level: Advanced Intermediate

  • Boat size: 30'–50' keelboat with auxiliary power

  • Environment: Extended coastal or inland cruising

  • Duration: 3 days, 2 nights (live-aboard)

  • Tuition: $1,395

ASA 104 is your gateway to chartering sailboats anywhere in the world. This live aboard course simulates a real multi-day cruising experience, complete with provisioning, emergency drills, dinghy use, and nighttime anchoring. You’ll sail, cook, navigate, and sleep aboard just like you would on a charter in the BVI or San Juans.

  • Crew management and emergency protocols

  • Docking in unfamiliar harbors

  • Living aboard: galley operations, head systems, etc.
